On This Week: Jason Becker – Not Dead Yet, Letter One, Valtari Film Experiment and More
This week we’re bringing back the popular Hot Docs 2012 festival hit Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet. The film charts the life of guitar-protege Jason Becker who, in the 80′s, was touted as being the best guitarist on the scene. Even David Lee Roth noticed this and immediately hired him. Sadly Becker never got a chance to tour with Roth as he was diagnosed with ALS and was given five years to live. Beating all odds, Becker is still alive and his passion for music helped him develop a new method of recording music, with his chin. The results of his new compositions are staggering and his story is truly inspiring.
We’re also premiering Sigur Ros’ new film The Valtari Film Experiment. The idea for the film began when the band sent out a call for filmmakers to make and submit short films based on the songs from their most recent album Valtari. The results are spellbinding with entries from veteran filmmakers (John Cameron Mitchell and Floria Sigismondi) and new filmmakers from around the world. It’s a beautiful music video collage of short films with a sonic soundtrack. It’s only screening once in Toronto (Saturday, December 8, 9:30 p.m.), so be sure to come out and catch this while you can.
We also have a special presentation of Tony Nardi’s provocative performance doc Letter One on Friday, December 7, at 9 p.m. What started as a protest letter to a popular Canadian TV show for their questionable stereotyping turned into a monologue about the troubles plaguing the film and television industry. Nardi holds nothing back in his examination of the industry and there are tons of shocking revelations throughout the film. We’re thrilled to have Tony Nardi in attendance for the screening. He will participate in a post-screening panel with a collection of industry and cultural experts including TVO’s Thom Ernst (moderator).
Also be sure to check out three critically acclaimed Japanese films brought to us by the Japan Foundation on Sunday and Monday (admission is free). And if you’re looking for Tuesday night plans, join us for the next instalment in the NOW Talks Series featuring former Toronto Mayor David Miller, and musician Sarah Harmer!
